Ever wonder what actually happens to your money after you deposit it? At a credit union, the answer is simple: it stays close to home. This is called the local multiplier effect — the idea that money spent or invested locally circulates through a community again and again, creating more jobs, more opportunity, and more stability for everyone in it. Banking with a credit union isn’t just a personal financial choice. It’s a vote for your own neighborhood. Here’s how it works…

Your Deposits Stay Local

When you bank with a big national bank, a share of your money — and the profits made from it — often flows out of your community to shareholders elsewhere. Credit unions work differently:

  • Profits go back to members, not outside investors — often in the form of better loan rates and lower fees.
  • Local leaders make the decisions, because they live here too and understand what the community actually needs.
  • Small businesses get funded, which means more local jobs and more local spending.

A Safety Net Built for Real Life

Credit unions are also built with financial inclusion in mind — which matters most for households navigating tight budgets:

  • Fewer barriers to a safe account: lower minimum balances, fewer maintenance fees, and more affordable credit options for people traditional banks might turn away.
  • Financial literacy support: many credit unions partner with schools and local organizations to teach practical money management skills.

Real Communities, Real Impact

These aren’t abstract ideas — some of our partner credit unions are putting this into practice across the country right now:

  • Black Hills FCU (South Dakota) (featured in photo above): Community needs are at the heart of everything Black Hills Federal Credit Union does. The credit union’s Communication Action Team (CAT) fosters opportunities for employees to give back through monetary paycheck donations and quarterly supply drives. Three quarters into the year, the credit union and its employees have focused on supporting the unhoused, victims of domestic violence, veterans, animal rescues, and food pantries in the communities they serve, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Billings, Montana, and everywhere in between. Small individual contributions from many have added up to a huge impact. The local impact by the numbers: 39 non-profit organizations supported, 4,377 items collected, $48,100 donated.

  • Eagle Community Credit Union (California) For nearly 90 years, Eagle Community Credit Union has been helping Orange County, California residents achieve their financial goals, including the dream of homeownership. While Eagle’s history spans nine decades, the credit union began offering alternative home financing in 2017 and has since helped more than 3200 members purchase manufactured homes. In a region where housing costs continue to rise, these specialized loans provide an important pathway to homeownership for hardworking individuals and families. It’s just one more way Eagle is making a lasting difference in the communities we proudly serve.

  • Wasatch Peaks Credit Union (Utah) sponsors a personal finance simulation program for every high school financial literacy teacher across eight counties in Northern Utah. The program allows students to have access to hands-on financial education at no cost to their schools. Through this initiative, more than 15,000 students each year gain real-world experience managing budgets, saving money, and making financial decisions in a safe, interactive learning environment.
  • Santa Ana Federal Credit Union (California): In the past fiscal year, Santa Ana Federal Credit Union delivered 65 free financial education presentations reaching more than 1,600 youth and adults in their community. Through partnerships with local schools and community organizations, they help people build practical skills around credit, debt, budgeting and financial decision-making. By providing these resources locally, they are helping strengthen the financial well-being of individuals and the broader Santa Ana community.
